HUDDERSFIELD STUDENTS HELP OUT

During the past few months a number of students past and present, have shown their support for the university by helping out at Education Exhibitions all over the world. The most recent examples of this were in Lille; France where Line Tabbara and Thomas Tartaglia, (pictured) who are both currently studying Logistics, represented the University with Linda Charles, European Recruitment Officer.

There was also support from Abdulrahman Al-Shaaby,(pictured) a graduate of the MSc Automotive Systems Design and Analysis course, and is now Head of Cooperative Training and Recruitment at a college in Saudi Arabia. Abdulrahman attended an exhibition in Riyadh with staff from the Department of Engineering and the International Office.

Andrew Mandebura from the International Office said: “We actively encourage students to help us so that they can share their experiences with future students and give them an idea of what studying at the University of Huddersfield is really like”.

CHINESE STUDENT SCHEME VISITS CHINA

Representatives from the university and Weir Valves and Controls visited the Northern Consortium United Kingdom (NCUK) foundation students in Suzhou, China, to talk about the Career Opportunity Partnerships Scheme (COPS). This is a scheme operated by the university in partnership with multi-national companies to try and guarantee job opportunities to Chinese students.

This was the first stage in the scheme for students in Suzhou. At first companies make contact with students on the NCUK foundation programme in China and introduce themselves and the job opportunities available. These job opportunities are then made available for the students upon graduation, providing they have met the criteria set by the company and also completed a satisfactory work placement for one year.

Weir Valves and Controls is one of three partners involved in the scheme and are leaders in providing valve products for critical service and isolation applications globally.

Andrew Milner (pictured above), Manufacturing Development Manager for the Suzhou factory said: "This is a great scheme which enables Weir Valves & Controls to employ graduates with a good academic background & relevant work experience. I cannot express how important it is for the graduates and the future growth of our company to have an element of work experience as part of their educational program, more so as the global job market is incredibly competitive. The scheme allows the company and the student to set goals for their development and future integration into the company; this ensures both parties know what is expected of them. The scheme also allows the company to identify local students which have the potential to assist in growing the Suzhou business in the future".

CULTURE CLUBS ON CAMPUS

Final year students from the Department of Marketing at the university have been putting their theory to the test by hosting a successful international-themed fashion show.

Culture Shock event

Five students from the BA (Hons) Marketing degree had to organise the event as part of their Events Management module and demonstrate their ability host such an exhibition. Over 170 guests attended the charity event in order to raise money for the Laura Crane Trust which took place in February.

‘Culture Shock’ – A Multicultural Fashion and Dance show (pictured above) included performances of Bollywood, African and Greek dancing. The students also worked closely with local community and clothing companies within Huddersfield and the region.

Students from the Czech-Republic

In addition, four students from the Czech-Republic (pictured) hosted a European-themed evening in Huddersfield in March.

The students, all from Liberec, are studying the BA (Hons) European Business degree and entertained hundreds of people from the town as part of an informal networking event that included games, karaoke, music and food and drink tasting. The occasion allowed students, staff and the general public to understand the characteristics, culture and traditions of different nations. The theme focused on four European countries; Czech-Republic, France, Germany and Poland. These are the four largest nations represented by students on campus:

“We are extremely proud that our overseas students are showing such initiative. This was an excellent opportunity for the people of Huddersfield and students on campus to gain a better cultural understanding of some of the many nationalities represented on our campus”, said Alan Tobi from the International and European Office.
